Fixing to UAE Walls: Concrete, Hollow Block and Plasterboard Anchors Explained

Every failed shelf, dropped mirror and TV pulled off a wall has the same root cause: the fixing did not suit the wall. The wall gets blamed, or the bracket does, but the actual failure sits in the two-dirham component in between. Getting this right requires knowing what you are drilling into, which is less obvious in UAE construction than most people expect.

Identifying what your wall is made of

Start by tapping. A dull, dead sound with no resonance suggests concrete or solid block. A hollow, drum-like sound suggests plasterboard or hollow block. Then drill a small pilot hole and examine the dust: grey powder indicates concrete, reddish or sandy dust indicates block, and white or brown paper-like debris indicates plasterboard. Feel the drill too — concrete resists hard throughout, whereas hollow block breaks through into a void after a short distance.

Concrete and solid block

These are the best substrates and the most forgiving. A correctly sized plastic plug with a screw works well for light loads, and sleeve or wedge anchors handle heavy items securely. Use a hammer drill with a masonry bit, clear dust from the hole before inserting the plug, and choose a plug diameter that matches the drill bit exactly. Most fixing failures in solid walls come from an oversized hole or dust preventing the plug expanding properly.

Hollow block: where things go wrong

This is the wall that catches people out. Hollow block drills much like solid block for the first centimetre or two, then breaks through into an internal void. A standard plastic plug inserted into that void has nothing to expand against, so it spins or pulls straight out under load. The correct fixings are those designed to toggle, expand or collapse behind the face shell. Because the failure is not obvious at installation — the fixing feels tight — this is how heavy items end up falling weeks later.

Plasterboard and stud walls

Plasterboard has almost no pull-out strength on its own. For light loads, self-drilling plasterboard anchors work adequately. For anything heavier, a toggle or spring toggle that opens behind the board spreads the load far better. For genuinely heavy items — a large television, a wall-hung cabinet — the honest answer is to find the framing behind the board and fix into that, or to install a backing plate. Relying on board fixings for heavy loads is a matter of when rather than whether.

Finding the studs

In drywall partitions, framing typically runs vertically at regular spacing. An electronic stud detector locates them, though metal framing common in UAE construction responds differently from timber, so use a detector that handles both. Tapping also works: the sound changes noticeably over a stud. Once you find one, others usually sit at consistent intervals from it. Fixing into framing transforms what a plasterboard wall can carry.

Before you drill: cables and pipes

This is the step to never skip. Electrical cables run to sockets and switches, and while conventions suggest vertical and horizontal zones, real installations do not always comply. Water pipes run in walls too, particularly near bathrooms and kitchens. Use a combined cable and pipe detector, scan the area rather than a single point, and be especially careful directly above, below and beside sockets and switches. Drilling into a live cable is dangerous; drilling into a pipe is expensive.

Matching fixing to actual load

Bracket manufacturers state load ratings, and those ratings assume a sound fixing into a suitable substrate. The wall, not the bracket, usually determines what is actually safe. Consider dynamic loads as well as static: a pull-out TV arm exerts far greater leverage than a flat bracket, and a shelf that gets leaned on sees more than the weight of what sits on it. A reasonable margin over the calculated load is sensible rather than excessive.

Tiled walls, which need care

Drilling tile requires a tile or diamond bit, drilling slowly without hammer action until through the tile, then switching to hammer for the substrate behind. Starting with hammer action cracks tiles reliably. Aim for the centre of a tile rather than near an edge or through grout, since edges chip and grout gives an inconsistent hole. Masking tape over the drill point stops the bit wandering across a glazed surface.

The tenancy consideration

In a rented UAE property, wall fixings create holes you will be expected to make good at handover. This is worth planning: fewer, better-placed fixings cost less to repair than many exploratory ones. Filling and touching up anchor holes yourself before the final inspection is almost always cheaper than the deduction a landlord will apply for the same work.
