Where to Position CCTV Cameras in a Dubai Villa (and Where Not To)

Most CCTV systems we are asked to review have the same problem: cameras mounted where cabling was convenient rather than where they would actually capture a usable image. The result is footage that shows something happened without showing who did it — which is worse than useless when it matters.

Cover entry points first, in this order

Priority one is the main entrance door, at face height rather than roof height. Priority two is the driveway or gate, angled to capture both people and vehicle plates. Priority three is the rear or garden door, historically the most common actual entry point in villa break-ins because it is least overlooked. Only after those three are properly covered does it make sense to add wide-area garden or perimeter views.

The height mistake almost everyone makes

Cameras mounted high under the roofline look tidy and are hard to tamper with — and they capture the tops of heads. For identification you want cameras at roughly 2.5–3 metres, angled slightly down, so faces fill a useful part of the frame. Use high mounting for overview cameras that establish what happened, and lower mounting for identification cameras at each entry point. A system with only overview cameras is a system that will disappoint you exactly once.

Lighting and backlight

The most common image failure in UAE villas is a camera pointed at a bright entrance during the day: the sun behind a visitor turns them into a silhouette. Position cameras so the light source is behind the camera, not behind the subject, and where that is impossible use models with true WDR (wide dynamic range). At night, infrared reflects hard off nearby white walls and glass, washing out the image — so keep IR cameras clear of adjacent reflective surfaces.

Where not to point a camera

Respect privacy boundaries and UAE law takes this seriously. Do not point cameras into a neighbour’s windows, garden or private space; avoid covering shared corridors and common areas in buildings without owners-association approval; and never install cameras in bathrooms, bedrooms or any space with a reasonable expectation of privacy, including areas used by domestic staff. Misuse of recorded footage carries real legal consequences here — the system is for protecting your property, not monitoring people.

Storage, retention and the part people forget

Decide your retention period before choosing a recorder: a 4-camera system at reasonable quality typically needs 2TB for around 30 days of continuous recording, less if you use motion-triggered recording. Then actually check it works — test playback monthly, confirm the recorder clock is correct (footage with the wrong timestamp is far weaker evidence), and make sure at least one person other than you knows how to export a clip.
