In a climate with 50°C summers and almost no rainfall, irrigation is not a garden accessory — it is the life support system. Nearly every failing garden we are called to has a healthy plant selection and a broken or badly designed watering system. Fix the irrigation and the garden usually recovers on its own.

Drip versus sprinkler: use both, in the right places

Drip irrigation delivers water slowly at the root zone with almost no evaporation loss — it is the correct choice for shrubs, hedges, palms, flower beds and anything planted individually. Sprinklers are for lawns and dense ground cover where uniform surface coverage is needed. The common mistake is watering shrub beds with sprinklers: most of the water evaporates or lands on leaves, encouraging fungal problems while the roots stay dry.

When to water — and the myth of daily light watering

Water early morning, roughly 4–7am, when evaporation is lowest and leaves dry before the sun peaks. Evening watering leaves foliage damp overnight and invites disease. More importantly: water deeply and less often rather than lightly every day. Short daily cycles keep moisture in the top few centimetres and train roots to stay shallow, where they cook in summer. Longer, less frequent cycles push roots down where the soil stays cooler and damper.

The five failures we find most often

One: controllers still running a winter schedule in June, or a summer schedule in January — a timer nobody has adjusted in two years. Two: drip lines chewed by rodents or crushed by foot traffic, leaking hundreds of litres a day into one spot. Three: emitters blocked by hard-water scale, so a line looks intact but delivers nothing to half the plants. Four: solenoid valves failed shut, silently killing an entire zone. Five: sprinkler heads misaligned after mowing, watering the wall instead of the lawn.

Soil is half the system

UAE sand drains so fast that water passes the root zone before plants can absorb it. Proper preparation — organic compost worked into planting pits, and a 5–7cm mulch layer on the surface — dramatically increases how much of each litre actually reaches the plant. Mulch alone can cut surface evaporation substantially and keeps root-zone temperature down, which matters as much as water volume in July.

What good irrigation saves

Between converting shrub beds from sprinkler to drip, repairing leaks, correcting seasonal scheduling and mulching, a typical villa garden we overhaul uses materially less water while looking better than it did before — often paying for the work through the water bill within a year or two. The garden also becomes more resilient: deep-rooted plants on a correct schedule survive a controller failure or a holiday far better than shallow-rooted ones on daily sprinkling.
